If you’re in the market for a new air conditioner in the Houma, LA area, you’ve probably come across the term SEER rating. But what does it really mean, and why should you care? Understanding SEER ratings is key to making an informed decision when it comes to energy efficiency, long term savings, and comfort for your home or business.
Let’s break down what SEER ratings are, how they affect your energy bills, and how to choose the right rating for our local climate.
What Is a SEER Rating?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a measurement of how efficiently an air conditioning system operates over an entire cooling season. In simple terms, the higher the SEER rating, the more efficiently the system uses electricity to cool your space.
To calculate a SEER rating, the total amount of cooling a unit provides (measured in BTUs) over a typical season is divided by the total amount of energy it consumes (measured in watt-hours). So, if you’re comparing two AC systems, one with a SEER rating of 14 and another with a SEER of 18, the one with the higher rating will use less energy to cool the same area.
Why SEER Ratings Matter for Houma Homeowners and Businesses
In Houma, LA, where summers are long, hot, and humid, your air conditioner isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. That’s why understanding SEER ratings is so important. The higher the SEER, the more efficient your cooling system, and the lower your monthly energy bills can be.
Even a small bump in SEER can make a noticeable difference. For example, upgrading from an outdated SEER 10 system to a modern SEER 15 unit could save you up to 35% on your cooling costs. That means if you’re currently spending $100 a month on AC, you could keep $35 in your pocket, month after month (Energy.gov).
Current SEER Standards You Should Know
Minimum SEER requirements have changed in recent years. According to Energy.gov, residential air conditioners in the Southeast (which includes Louisiana) must now meet updated energy standards:
- As of January 2023, split system air conditioners must meet 14.3 SEER2, which is approximately equal to 15 SEER under the old rating system.
- ENERGY STAR certified units must have even higher efficiency, making them a top choice for long term savings and sustainability.
These ratings can vary depending on whether you’re installing for a residential or commercial property, a central HVAC system, heat pump, or ductless mini-split. Always check with a licensed local HVAC contractor to ensure your system meets the current requirements.
How SEER Ratings Impact Energy Costs and Comfort
SEER isn’t just a number, it directly affects how your AC performs and how much you pay. A higher SEER system typically:
- Uses less electricity per cooling cycle
- Runs more efficiently during long, hot stretches
- Reduces wear and tear on components
- Enhances comfort by maintaining more consistent indoor temperatures
Many high efficiency units also include smart features like variable speed fans, zoning capabilities, or programmable thermostats. These upgrades offer better temperature control, quieter operation, and even more savings.
